Naomi Klein on the Colbert Report

-I think what Naomi Klein is trying to say in the video, is that the goverment always usually take control of us whenever we feel that there is no hope because a natural disaster like the Hurricane Katrina couldnt be stopped, and the only thing that could have done was to save and help all those people in New Orleans to find home and shelter. So the community and the people trusted the Goverment. But instead the Goverment cheated and took advantage.
-We could relate this argument that Klein states, to the cluster by seeing how in most all of our texts and videos that we have learned, shows a U.S imperialism that controls many of the countries that needs economic help, and when they do this, the U.S goverment exploits the poor nation and take advantages in many ways.

Interesting - but what do you make of the fact that the government was *not* in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina?

I agree, the US government did not act properly when it came to evacuation and safety. I never thought about it till we saw the film...

Ok - so if we take togother the government *intervening* in many counties militarily, economically, and politically, and then *not* acting when people in the US need help, what do we make of this? What does this tell us about the *ideological* part of the shock doctrine?

Did you notice what Klein specifically said about New Orleans in the clip?

I didnt mean to state that the goverment was not there in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The goverment was there but not as soon as possible,as they were on Thailand when the Tsunami hit South Asia.
-Also the ideologies that Klein argues is how she wants the people to be ready for this kind of shock and the impulses where the goverment could take advantage of us.
-What Klein did said on New Orleans,is how a hurricane took out all the public housing system, where they get this people in to this houses which they cant afford it and then take them out again. So with this they take advantage of this poor people because in the end they bailed them out

What did you make of the person Klein quoted who said, "God couldn't clean up public housing but the hurricane did?"

What's the ideology behind that statement?

The government didn't act fast enough for the people if New Orleans and that was a disgrace. I knew we weren't there right away but when we saw the film it was really upsetting to know we took that long.

I FIND IT FUNNY HOW THEY GOVERNMENT TOOK SUCH LATE ACTION TO HELP OUT A STATE IN THE U.S...YET FOR THAILAND THEY WERE THERE LIKE THE NEXT DAY.....HOW IS IS IT FOR A COUNTRY THAT IS FURHTER AWAY THEY CAN OFFER FASTER ASSISTANCE THEM TO A STATE THATS LIKE A FEW HRS AWAY... IS IT BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT SEES IT AS NEW ORLEANS IS PART OF US SO IF WE EVER NEED HELP THEY HAVE NO OTHER CHOICE BUT TO HELP AND TO THAILAND SINCE ITS NOT PART OF THE U.S THEY HAVE TO LIKE GAIN THIER TRUST INCASE OF AN EMERGANCY?...

I agree with you that the u.s government showed little interest on helping the people of New Orleans. In my opinion the United States is a self interested empire. New Orleans is a place in America and the govenment should of showed more concern to this.

So Tommy, do you see a link between it being an empire and not helping in New Orleans?
